Sublingual Absorption of CBD Oil

Posted by Dr. Taylor on

Ritualx CBD oil is a tincture of full spectrum, hemp derived, CBD oil. In our tincture, we include a wide variety of phytocannabinoids from our North Carolina grown hemp plants, as well as,  0.3% THC, to provide an entourage effect of phytocannabinoids. Our carrier oil is a mixture of coconut oil derived MCT oil and hemp seed oil.

Tincture products can be found in many different concentrations and flavors. CBD is fat soluble and the Endocannabinoid System itself is also lipid based. Tinctures are made with a carrier oil like grapeseed, MCT (coconut), olive, or hemp oil, to increase absorption. The product is taken sublingually, placed under the tongue, and held there for 60 seconds, then swallowed.

The liver metabolizes the phytocannabinoids, including CBD, immediately when introduced through oral ingestion.3 This is called the first pass metabolism of the liver, or the cytochrome P450 liver enzyme system. Your liver basically intercepts the majority of the edible you have eaten and breaks it down to where the medicinal effects are diminished. CBD will have less therapeutic effects if you consume your tincture by mouth and swallow the oil before holding the oil under your tongue for 60 seconds. This allows for increased absorption through the sublingual gland in the mouth, and also partially bypasses premature CBD breakdown by the liver.  The CBD goes straight into the bloodstream when absorbed under the tongue. Beneficial effects and diminished sensations of undesired symptoms can be sensed in a little as 10 to 15 minutes.

CBD can block the metabolism of certain pharmaceutical drugs, because CBD and other phytocannabinoids compete with the same liver enzymes that are used to breakdown other pharmaceutical medications.1 Prescription and over-the-counter medications should be taken an hour or more before consuming CBD oil.2  It is recommended that you should consult your physician first before initiating a regimen of CBD oil.

Companies are not allowed to give specific dosing recommendations because CBD remains unregulated by the FDA. This is actually alright, because CBD dosing is highly individualized. One person may need 1 drop of tincture a day to alleviate symptoms, while another person with the same condition could require 50 or 100 drops. In general, the greater a person’s internal endocannabinoid deficiency, the more phytocannabinoids they will require. Known factors that affect dosing include:

  • The current state of the individual’s Endocannabinoid System, in particular the amount of inflammation in their body
  • The body’s sensitivity to CBD
  • The person’s body weight. Lighter people usually require less CBD
  • The person’s general health
  • The person’s age. Younger people usually require less CBD
