Is CBD Safe and Effective for Dogs?

Posted by Janna Champagne,RN on

As with any pet wellness trend, when it comes to CBD oil for dogs, there’s a lot of information floating around online. Of course, you want to do what’s best for your pup, which leads to the question: What are the need-to-know facts regarding CBD oil?

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of the many cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. CBD stimulates certain receptors in the body to optimize the Endocannabinoid System, the network that is responsible for maintaining the body’s state of equilibrium. For more information on how CBD works with our Endocannabinoid System, read our article on the subject.

Is CBD Safe for my Dog?

Currently, there has been very little research on how CBD interacts with dogs. Despite this, scientists do know that cannabinoids interact with the Endocannabinoid receptors located in the central and peripheral nervous systems to optimize health and wellness.  Like humans, dogs also have an Endocannabinoid System.

It is also  important to note that the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is currently sponsoring a study, through the Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, that will evaluate the use of CBD in treatment-resistant epileptic dogs. The CHF hopes that this will be the first study to gain scientific data on the use of CBD in dogs with this condition.

How Can CBD Help My Dog?

CBD has been shown to potentially help dogs suffering from:

  • Pain
  • Inflammation
  • Anxiety
  • Cancer
  • Digestive issues
  • Seizures

Possible Side Effects of CBD in Dogs

While there’s no scientific data on the side effects of CBD usage for dogs, there are potential side effects based on how CDB affects humans.

  • Dry mouth: Research has shown that CBD can decrease the production of saliva. For dogs, this would manifest as an increased thirst.
  • Lowered blood pressure: High doses of CBD have been known to cause a temporary drop in blood pressure. Even though the drop is small, it might create a brief feeling of light-headedness.
  • Drowsiness: Dog owners have used CBD to treat anxiety. The calming effect of CBD can also cause slight drowsiness, especially when using higher doses.

CBD Dosing

Often CBD suppliers who make critter-specific formulations have dosing instructions explained, but in the event of a serious illness, it may be important to seek the advice of a knowledgeable vet before using. Since all dogs/illnesses are not the same, starting with a very low dose and increasing until symptoms are managed is also a good approach.

There is research supporting that 2mg/kg of CBD benefitted dogs suffering osteoarthritis pain, while the optimal dose of CBD for canine seizures is 5mg/kg, but depending on illness severity more or less may be required.
