Is CBD a Possible Remedy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

Posted by Janna Champagne,RN on

What is CBD?

PTSD, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, is defined as a mental health condition that's triggered by a traumatic experience, affecting an estimated 10% of the population. Symptoms of PTSD may include: anxiety, anger, depression, irritability, and insomnia or sleep disruption.

Since the pharmaceutical options to manage PTSD usually result in severe (and potentially permanent) side effects, many are pursuing effective options with better safety profiles. CBD may be the answer we have been seeking to provide safe and effective relief of PTSD.

How CBD May Help With PTSD

PTSD symptoms may be ongoing despite therapy to address and release the traumatic event(s), and for many it’s a lifelong struggle. Thankfully Cannabidiol (CBD) may offer relief to PTSD patients through its potential to target and manage the symptoms of depression, nightmares and anxiety.

Research also indicates that CBD may help to address the underlying causes of PTSD. For instance, one research study found that CBD may help diminish traumatic memories, which may help reduce PTSD trigger reactions. Another study found that CBD may disrupt the formation of fear based memories, thereby potentially protecting victims from PTSD onset.

Another case study review found that when CBD was added to routine psychiatric care, symptoms reduction was reported including relief of nightmares.

According to another review, pre-clinical trials reflect that CBD may be an effective intervention for PTSD, by blocking the accumulation and creation of painful memories, through its interactions with the EndoCannabinoid System.

Since the goal of any medical approach is choosing the least risky and most potentially beneficial intervention, CBD is a viable option for anyone suffering PTSD.
