How CBD May Help Autoimmune Disorders

Posted by Dr. Taylor on

Over 20% of the U.S. population has been diagnosed with an Autoimmune disorder; varying diseases that occur when the immune system overreacts and attacks normal body tissues.

Normally, your immune system sends out antibodies to guard against viruses and germs and does not attack healthy cells. However, with certain diseases, the antibodies mistake healthy cells with foreign cells, resulting in your body attacking itself.

Types of autoimmune disease include:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Lupus
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  • Crohn's
  • Hashimoto's

Symptoms can include:

  • Hair loss
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Skin rashes
  • Tingling
  • Numbness in the limbs.

At the time of this publication, there is no known cure; although recent research has indicated that CBD may help manage Autoimmune Disorders.

What is CBD and How Does It Work

Cannabidiol, or CBD derives from the hemp plant; more specifically from the seeds, stalks and flowers of the hemp plant and can be extracted, independent of other cannabinoids in oil form.

Unlike the cannabinoid Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is non-psychotropic and is also non-addictive.

Cannabinoids, which can be either consumed or produced naturally by the body, are chemical compounds that interact with the body’s Endocannabinoid System. This system manages homeostasis, the state of equilibrium, and affects bodily processes such as appetite, mood and sleep. Because of this interaction, scientific research has shown that CBD may help manage many conditions.

How CBD May Help Manage Autoimmune Disorders

CBD may reduce many common symptoms associated with Autoimmune Disorders (ie: Inflammation) and research also reflects that CBD may work by helping reduce immune over-reactivity, which makes the body attack healthy cells.

The following are a few examples of common Autoimmune disorders that CBD may benefit (linked to supporting research):
