How CBD Can Help With Cancer

Posted by Janna Champagne,RN on

Cannabidiol, or CBD derives from the hemp plant; more specifically from the seeds, stalks and flowers of the hemp plant and can be extracted, independent of other cannabinoids in oil form. Unlike the cannabinoid Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is non-psychotropic and is also non-addictive.

Cannabinoids, which can be either consumed or produced naturally by the body, are chemical compounds that interact with the body’s Endocannabinoid System. This system manages homeostasis, the state of equilibrium, and affects bodily processes such as appetite, mood and sleep. Because of this interaction, scientific research has shown that CBD may help manage many conditions such as cancer.

How CBD Can Help with Cancer

Research shows that Cannabidiol (CBD) holds promise for treatment and adjunctive support for many forms of cancer. For instance, studies indicate that CBD blocks the GPR 55 pathway, which promotes growth of colorectal and pancreatic cancers. CBD has also shown potential benefits for inducing cellular apoptosis of breast cancer, leukemia, and inhibiting prostate carcinoma growth

As mentioned above, CBD interacts with our Endocannabinoid System, which contains prolific CB1 and CB2 receptors. Scientists have learned the likely reason for the efficacy of CBD to target cancer with the discovery of higher than normal concentration of CB1 and CB2 receptors in various cancer cells.

According to Dr. Ethan Russo, renowned cannabinoid therapeutic physician, Endocannabinoid System Deficiency may promote cancer cell growth. Deficiency in 2-Arachadonyl Glycerol (normally produced by our Endocannabinoid System) can be reversed by supplementing plant-derived Cannabidiol, offering a general explanation of how CBD may minimize overall cancer growth.

In addition to targeting the roots and progression of cancer proliferation, CBD may offer safe and effective tools for mitigating the symptoms of cancer and its mainstream treatments. CBD is known for its ability to decrease pain, manage nausea, and improve anxiety or depression.

CBD has even shown promise for improving the efficacy of chemotherapy when administered concurrently, although the potential for interactions with pharmaceuticals should be assessed by a knowledgeable medical professional before proceeding.
