CBD for Mental Health Disorders

Posted by Janna Champagne,RN on

Mental health disorders affect an estimated 1.2 Million Americans (or 1 in 25 adults), making this a common problem in our population. While some mental health disorders may be triggered by traumatic events, the response in the body occurs in the neurotransmitters, which allow communication between neurons in the brain. When neurotransmitter levels are out of balance, mental health disorders may result. CBD may benefit those suffering mental health disorders by balancing neurotransmitters.

What is CBD

CBD is one of hundreds of cannabinoids found in the Cannabis Sativa L (hemp) plant. CBD has been ingested for more than 5000 years in cultures around the world, and has a well-founded safety profile for easing dozens of conditions and has never resulted in harm.

CBD interacts with ECS receptors, filling vital nutrient deficiency, and promoting homeostasis or balance. This interaction may reduce the impact of Endocannabinoid Deficiency, which contributes to the imbalances found in chronic illness. When our bodies are ill, we deplete 2AG very quickly, and although the chemical structures of 2AG and CBD differ slightly, the body responds to both exactly the same.

As this suggests, cannabinoids may be supplemented through ingestion of plants like Cannabis Sativa L hemp (phytocannabinoids). This is especially helpful when the endocannabinoids our bodies produce (like 2AG) are not enough to maintain homeostasis or balance.

How Can CBD Improve Mental Health

Not only may CBD help alleviate the symptoms of mental health disorders like depression, psychosis, schizophrenia, anxiety and bipolar disorder but since CBD targets and rebalances the neurotransmitters that are askew, CBD may actually reverse the root cause of mental health illnesses.

CBD works differently from pharmaceutical options to manage mental health issues, which don’t offer any potentially balancing effects. In addition, CBD is considered a safer option since it doesn’t entail the same risk of side effects as pharmaceutical options (overdose and addiction), making CBD the common sense approach for patients seeking relief with fewer side effects.
