How CBD May Help Manage Crohn's Disease

Posted by Janna Champagne,RN on

As of 2019, 1.6 Million Americans suffer with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (including Crohn’s Disease), with health care costs at $3.6 Billion per year. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a strong, safe, anti-inflammatory element, making it a good candidate for treating conditions like Crohn’s Disease or Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

CBD has the ability to reduce production of the chemicals that trigger inflammation in Crohn’s Disease. So far, research has indicated that CBD could be a very promising treatment for all sorts of gut and stomach conditions, including infections, inflammation, constipation, nausea and abdominal pain, which are many of the problems found in those who suffer from Crohn’s.

One of the symptoms commonly found in Crohn’s Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome is hyper motility, meaning frequent, and often painful, bowel movements. Typically this results in diarrhea and sometimes bloody stools. In animal studies, CBD has shown to improve the symptom of hyper motility associated with inflammation, as is experienced in patients with Crohn’s Disease or IBS.

In addition to CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects, it has also been shown to exhibit pain-relieving effects which could provide additional relief to Crohn’s Disease and IBS sufferers. There is also preliminary evidence supported by many research articles stating that CBD may be effective at treating nausea and vomiting, which are commonly target symptoms in patients diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease or IBS. Together, CBD’s effects on pain, inflammation, nausea, and intestinal motility could provide relief to those suffering from Crohn’s Disease or IBS.

There is also evidence that another cannabinoid commonly found in hemp, cannabigerol, or CBG, may be another valuable chemical for treating Crohn’s Disease or IBD. CBG has been shown to help reduce inflammation in the colon, and promote balance in the GI system.
